Five Simple Ways to Reduce Your Meat Consumption

While there are plenty of reasons to reduce the amount of meat we eat,
whether they are environmental or health related, committing to such a big
change can be overwhelming. For most of us, the best way to start is by not
eliminating meat completely. Simply start with eating less of it and explore
the versatility of vegetables. Chances are you’ll soon find it quite easy to eat
even less or lose meat completely.

Here are five simple ways to get started on your plant-based journey.

#1 Introduce one fixed meatless day in your week
While attempting to eat less or phase out meat completely, it often helps in
the beginning to schedule at least one day a week where you eliminate
meat from all meals. That’s one fixed day where you familiarize yourself
(and your family) with new vegetarian or vegan recipes and possibly try out
meat substitutes.

#2 Get inspired
There are so many ways to gain inspiration for vegetarian and vegan
dishes. Buy a vegetarian cookbook, look online for recipes, or go out for
dinner to a vegetarian restaurant. While you might think it's difficult to
imagine a meal without meat, there are so many sources available to gain
knowledge, encouragement, and a whole new perspective on plant-based
cooking.

#3 Make plants the star of your dish
If you don't want to make the switch all at once, try to reduce the amount of
meat by putting more emphasis on the vegetables. Think of the vegetables
and grains as more than just a side dish. The more effort you put in the
preparation, the more you can move toward them as a meat substitute.

#4 Set realistic goals
Do not set unrealistic goals, especially when you are accustomed to eating
meat on a regular basis. Completely phasing meat out right away is not
easy. For some people, a better option is to phase out categories of meat
gradually. Start by cutting out red meat and then continue on to other types.
Once you’ve eliminated a few things, maybe you’ll be ready to try eating
vegetarian for one week. For some, it's not that difficult at all!

#5 It's all about planning and preparing
Planning ahead will make it easier to avoid falling back on meat-based
dishes. As previously mentioned, a big part of preparing involves finding
recipes or browsing through cookbooks. The better prepared you are to cook
plant-based meals and possibly try some of the delicious meat
alternatives, the less likely you will be tempted by meat or maybe even
reach for the junk food.
